What is Contact Dermatitis?

Have you ever experienced red rashes or itching in areas of your body where you apply or wear makeup, fragrances, jewelry or clothing? This could be contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is an itchy rash that can be caused by the skin becoming in direct contact with a substance or material. This is common in places where you may wear jewelry such as watches and bracelets, tight clothing, fragrances, or unknowingly rubbed up against a material that may cause an allergic reaction.

If you are experiencing:

  • A red rash

  • Itching

  • Dry or scaly skin

  • Burning or tenderness

  • Blisters and bumps

Any of these symptoms could be a sign of contact dermatitis and can be caused by not only what you wear but irritants such as household products - detergents, bleach, shampoos, etc., plants, fertilizers, pesticides, and airborne substances.

To help prevent contact dermatitis from occurring, it is important to:

  • Avoid using and being around irritants and allergens - this will help identify other substance and materials that may cause skin irritations.

  • Wash your skin thoroughly with warm water and a mild soap with little to no fragrance.

  • Protect your skin by wearing gear such has gloves, face mask, and shields if you have to be in direct contact with a substance or material that may cause you to breakout.

  • Moisturize your skin regularly. Applying a moisturizing act as a barrier and help nurture the skin.

If you notice your skin becoming irritated, it is important to take care of it ASAP! Contact a dermatologist if the skin worsens.
